Well, the last week has been interesting. At the moment, I am at the Portland Community College Sylvania campus (hey look, a map), waiting for Krystal's spanish class to finish. So, in the meantime, I'll chat about my week.
Normally on my trips back to Oregon, I spend long, boring days at my dad's house, watching paint peel off the rental house he lives in, waiting for him, my sis, any friend in town, anyone to appear. My previous 'vacations' here have generally been boring. Not a waste of time, since I get to see my dad and all that, but painfully dull. This is mostly because my breaks generally don't coincide with...anyone.
This time, though, things have been fun. I've been hanging out with Scott and his friends (some I know from high school, some are new) quite a bit. It is nice to associate with a different crowd of peers than I'm used to. The different lifestyles, tastes in music/movies, etc, is really a fresh experience.
And, you know, there's the jungle juice.
Honestly though, I'm having a good time. When you spend the better part of a year neck-deep in Neumont and other projects, the sudden chance to just hang out and socialize, while accomplishing little, is a great relief.
I have to head up to Washington at some point in the next few days, though. I'm hoping I can get my grandparents to sign my next signature loan. I need roughly $23,000 in loans every three terms that I'm at Neumont, and my last package finished disbursing a few weeks ago. Getting them approved is a trivial process, and the actual responsibility of the co-signer (needed, since for whatever reason I can't just sign it myself) is minor. Hell, the worst case scenario for me when I graduate is around $60,000 a year. I'll have no trouble paying it back. I just hope I can convince my grandparents that it's no big deal.
Otherwise, I won't be able to return to Neumont next term, and I'll have to get a job. Ew.
P.S. I am now a fan of AFI and a few other emo/punk rock bands (so long as they don't scream. God, the screaming ruins songs). Matt, expect a slew of CD's to be added to the Impala's collection.
It's been an interesting couple of days.
My latest term at Neumont just finished, and what a disaster it was. Lets just say I'll be happy to focus on the next term, and forget a good deal of what happened in this one. I did get a 105/100 on my last game dev assignment, which was awesome. Which reminds me.
Theta Wars is pseudo completed. Check out the video:
The video quality of the streaming YouTube is kinda crappy, but it gets the gist across. The game itself runs at 60fps; the video you're watching was captured at 30, hence the choppyness. It's quite silky smooth in person, though :). I know it's not the most impressive thing in the world but hey, Matt and I did it in under two days! Game engine and everything!
I'll be tweaking things here and there, and working on additional functionality. I just finished work on a cool little algorithm that makes the player collide with the wall properly (yea, at the time the video was taken, the player could freely leave the box). Basically you just store the player's position in the previous frame and, if a collision with the wall is detected, move the player to the previous frame :). Simple and effective.
Anyway, about the road trip. My sister's boyfriend, Scott, and his sister, Terra, will be here in an hour or so to pick me up. They left at about 6pm PST; it's about a 10-12 hour drive, give or take. Aside from the usual clothes and shower stuff, I'll be taking my laptop, my desktop, and my Xbox 360. The desktop will mostly be for PDX Lan, the largest LAN party on the west coast. It shall be awesome.
The rules of a short term road trip like this are simple: Stay awake, and keep the driver entertained. The punishment for failing to do so is death by road burn. In other words (since I've been up for about 16 hours at this point), I'm going to be drinking a lot of Monster energy drinks. May the Lord (if there is one) have mercy on my stomach lining.
Expect pictures of said road trip, and maybe posts along the way (when I can jack wireless at random gas stations).
